Mini Split Not Cooling? 12 Causes Ranked by How Often They're the Culprit

Your mini split is running but not cooling — here's the diagnostic order I walk customers through over the phone, ranked by what actually fixes it. Most calls are solved in under 15 minutes.

When a customer calls saying their mini split is "running but not cooling," I have a mental flowchart I work through. Most of the time we find the problem in the first 5-10 minutes. Here's the same flowchart, ranked by what actually turns out to be the cause.

First: Confirm It's Actually Not Cooling

Before diagnosing, rule out the simple stuff. Set the unit to Cool mode (not Auto, not Dry, not Fan). Set the temperature 5°F below the room temperature. Wait 10 minutes. Put your hand in front of the supply vent. If the air is even slightly cool, the system is working — it just may be undersized or fighting heavy load. If the air is room temperature or warmer, you have a real problem.

#1: Dirty Air Filter (about 40% of calls)

This is the most common cause and the easiest fix. A clogged filter restricts airflow across the indoor coil. The coil gets too cold, frost forms, airflow drops further, and now your unit is recirculating the same cold air without removing heat from the room.

Test: Pop the front panel off the indoor unit and look at the filters. If you can't see daylight through them, they're clogged.

Fix: Wash with warm soapy water, let dry completely, reinstall. Most MrCool units have washable mesh filters good for 5-10 years of cleaning before they need replacement. If your unit has been running with a clogged filter for weeks, the indoor coil may also be iced up — turn it off for 2-3 hours to let the ice melt before restarting.

#2: Dirty Outdoor Coil (about 20% of calls)

The outdoor condenser rejects heat to outside air. If its coil is clogged with grass clippings, cottonwood fluff, or leaves, it can't shed heat — and your indoor unit can't cool.

Test: Walk outside. Look at the condenser. The fins should be clean enough to see light through. If they're matted with debris, you found it.

Fix: Turn power off at the breaker. Hose the outside of the coil with a garden hose, top-down, low pressure. Don't use high-pressure washers — they bend fins. Let dry, restore power.

#3: Refrigerant Leak (about 15% of calls)

Mini splits don't "use up" refrigerant. If the system is low, there's a leak somewhere — at a flare fitting, at a Schrader valve, or (rarely) in the coil itself.

Test: With the unit running in cool mode for 10+ minutes, feel the larger insulated copper line at the outdoor unit. It should be cold and slightly sweaty. If it's warm or dry, you're low on refrigerant. Look for oily residue on or below fittings — that's where refrigerant is escaping.

Fix: This is a pro-only repair. The leak must be found, fixed, and the system pulled into vacuum and recharged. Cost: $400-$900 typically. If the unit is over 12 years old and the leak is in the coil itself, replacement may make more sense than repair.

#4: Stuck Reversing Valve (about 8% of calls)

The reversing valve controls whether the system is cooling (heat pulled out of the house) or heating (heat pulled from outside air). Sometimes it sticks halfway between.

Test: Switch the unit to Heat mode for 5 minutes, then back to Cool. Sometimes the cycling unsticks the valve.

Fix: If the tap-and-cycle method doesn't work, the reversing valve solenoid may be failing. That's a pro repair, $250-$500.

#5: Wrong Mode or Setpoint (about 5% of calls)

It's worth restating: make sure the unit is in Cool mode, not Auto, Dry, or Fan-Only. And make sure the setpoint is below the current room temperature. I've talked customers through 30 minutes of diagnostics before realizing the kid had pressed the Dry mode button on the remote.

#6: Iced-Up Indoor Coil (about 4% of calls)

If you've been running with a dirty filter for a while, ice forms on the indoor coil. Once it's iced over, no airflow gets through, and the unit blows warm air over the ice instead of cool air across an unfrozen coil.

Test: Open the indoor unit. If you see white frost or ice on the coil fins, you have ice buildup.

Fix: Turn the unit off entirely (don't run fan-only — that wastes time). Let it thaw for 2-4 hours. Clean the filter while you wait. Then restart in Cool mode.

#7: Bad Capacitor on the Outdoor Unit (about 3% of calls)

The outdoor unit has a capacitor that helps the compressor and fan motor start. When the cap fails, the fan may run but the compressor won't engage — meaning no actual cooling.

Test: Stand by the outdoor unit. The fan should spin and you should hear the compressor running (a low hum, separate from the fan noise). If the fan spins but you hear no compressor, the cap may be the cause.

Fix: Capacitor replacement is a $30 part and a 15-minute job for an electrician — but you're working with capacitors that can hold a lethal charge. If you're not comfortable with HVAC electrical work, call a tech ($150-$300).

#8: Tripped High-Pressure Switch (about 2% of calls)

The high-pressure switch protects the compressor by shutting off when refrigerant pressure climbs too high. Causes: blocked outdoor airflow, dirty outdoor coil, refrigerant overcharge.

Test: If the unit runs for 5-15 minutes then shuts off and won't restart for several minutes, the high-pressure switch is likely tripping.

Fix: Address the underlying cause — clean the outdoor coil (#2 above) and clear any obstructions blocking airflow.

#9: Bad Indoor Blower Motor (about 1.5% of calls)

If the indoor fan isn't moving air, the unit can't cool the room even if refrigerant is flowing correctly.

Test: Set the fan to high. Hold a piece of paper near the supply vent. If the paper barely moves, the blower is failing.

#10: Failing Compressor (about 1% of calls)

The compressor is the heart of the system. When it fails, you get warm air. Sometimes it'll run electrically (drawing current) but not pump refrigerant.

Test: Listen at the outdoor unit. If the unit is humming/vibrating but you don't feel temperature differential between the two copper lines, the compressor may be locked or weak.

Fix: This is a major repair — $1,200-$2,500 — and on units over 8 years old, replacement is usually the better call.

#11: Wiring Fault (about 0.5% of calls)

Loose connection at the disconnect, control wire chewed by rodents, terminal block corrosion. Rare but happens.

Test: With power off, inspect the terminal blocks at both indoor and outdoor units for loose wires, burn marks, or rodent damage.

Fix: Re-terminate any loose connections. Replace damaged wire runs.

#12: Control Board Failure (about 0.5% of calls)

When to Stop DIY and Call a Pro

Stop DIY if:

  • You've eliminated the top 6 causes and the unit is still warm

  • You smell burning insulation (electrical fault — turn power off immediately)
