Mini Split Condensers.
The Outdoor Half.

The condenser is the outdoor unit of a mini split — the heat pump itself, containing the compressor and outdoor coil. Whether you're building a new system, replacing a failed unit, or expanding to a multi-zone setup, the condenser is the single most important component. We carry single-zone and multi-zone condensers from 9K to 60K BTU, including 5th Generation R-454B units that qualify for the maximum federal tax credit.

Buying Guide

How to choose a mini split condenser

Whether you're building from scratch or replacing a failed unit, three things drive the buying decision: BTU capacity, single vs multi-zone, and refrigerant type.

Match BTU to your needs

Single-zone condensers come in 9K, 12K, 18K, 24K, and 36K BTU — match the indoor head BTU you need. Multi-zone condensers run 18K (2 zones), 27K, 36K, 48K, and 60K (4-5 zones). When sizing multi-zone, your indoor BTU total can be 80-130% of the outdoor capacity.

Single-zone vs multi-zone condensers

Single-zone condensers pair with one indoor head. Multi-zone condensers have multiple refrigerant ports for 2-5 indoor heads. You can't convert single-zone to multi-zone after purchase — pick the right one upfront based on how many rooms you're cooling.

R-410A vs R-454B refrigerant

R-410A is the legacy refrigerant — phased out in new equipment from 2025 onward. R-454B is the new standard — better cold-weather performance, 80% lower global warming potential, and qualifies for stronger rebates. If you're buying a new condenser today, R-454B (5th Generation) is the right call.

Replacement: match indoor unit refrigerant

If you're replacing a failed condenser on an existing system, the new condenser must use the same refrigerant as your indoor unit. R-410A indoor units cannot run on an R-454B condenser without replacing the indoor unit too. When in doubt, replace the matched set.

Frequently Asked

Common questions

Can I replace just the condenser without replacing the indoor unit?+

Sometimes. If the indoor unit is the same brand, similar age, and uses the same refrigerant as the new condenser, a condenser-only replacement can work. Mixing refrigerants (R-410A indoor with R-454B outdoor) does NOT work. When in doubt, replace the matched indoor + outdoor set together.

How do I know what BTU condenser I need?+

For a new system: size by total indoor BTU demand (20-25 BTU per sq ft). For replacement: match the BTU rating on the existing condenser nameplate. Multi-zone systems can support indoor BTU totals up to 130% of outdoor capacity.

How long do mini split condensers last?+

Typically 12-20 years with regular outdoor coil cleaning and basic maintenance. The compressor (the most expensive component) usually goes 10-15 years. MrCool 5th Generation condensers include a 7-year compressor warranty when registered.

Where should I install the outdoor condenser?+

On a level concrete pad, wall bracket, or rooftop mount with at least 12 inches clearance on all sides for airflow. Avoid tight enclosures (recirculated hot air kills efficiency). In snowy climates, mount the condenser on a stand 12-24 inches above expected snow depth.
