Wall mount vs ceiling cassette vs floor console
The form factor matters more than most buyers realize. Each suits different rooms.
Wall-mount air handlers (90% of installs)
The standard mini split form factor — a slim white unit mounted high on an interior wall. Cheapest, easiest to install, widest BTU range (6K-24K), and works in any room with at least 8 feet of wall height. Best default unless you have specific aesthetic or layout constraints.
Ceiling cassette air handlers
Mount flush in the ceiling — only the slim grille shows. Best for offices with drop ceilings, finished basements, retail spaces, and any room where a wall-mounted unit would visually clutter the design. Slightly more expensive ($200-$500 premium) and require ceiling cavity space (8+ inches).
Floor console air handlers
Sit at floor level (like a baseboard radiator). Best for rooms with high windows where wall-mount would look awkward, or rooms with sloped ceilings. Also work well in older homes with thick exterior walls where running the line set up to a wall-mount is impractical.
Match air handler to your outdoor condenser
Indoor and outdoor units must be from the same brand and engineered as a matched system. Multi-zone outdoor condensers support specific indoor head model lists — check compatibility before buying replacement parts.

Can I replace just the air handler?+
Sometimes — if the new air handler is from the same brand, uses the same refrigerant, and matches the BTU compatibility list of your outdoor condenser. Multi-zone systems are particularly picky — check the outdoor unit's compatible indoor model list before buying.
How loud is a mini split air handler?+
Whisper-quiet — typically 25-45 dB at the unit. Ceiling cassettes are often slightly quieter than wall-mount because airflow disperses across a larger grille area. Compare to a window AC at 50-60 dB or a portable AC at 50-65 dB.
How high should I mount a wall-mount air handler?+
At least 6 feet from the floor and 6 inches from the ceiling. Higher mounts (closer to the ceiling) generally improve airflow distribution and prevent direct cold-air drafts on people sitting below. Avoid blocking the unit with shelving or curtains.
