How to choose the right heat pump

Heat pumps are sized in BTUs (cooling capacity) and rated by SEER2 (cooling efficiency) and HSPF2 (heating efficiency). Climate matters — a heat pump that excels in Florida is the wrong choice for Minnesota.

Step 1: Know your climate zone

In hot climates (south of the Mason-Dixon line) any modern heat pump performs well. In cold climates (winter design temp below 20°F), you want a Hyper Heat or cold-climate model. These deliver 100% rated capacity at 5°F and continue heating efficiently down to -22°F. Standard heat pumps lose capacity below freezing and may need backup heat.

Step 2: Decide ductless vs ducted

Ductless heat pumps (mini splits) install in any home — no ductwork required. They allow per-room temperature control and are 30-40% more efficient than ducted systems because they avoid duct losses. Ducted heat pumps replace a central air system in homes that already have ductwork. We carry both.

Step 3: Size for heating, not cooling

In cold climates, size your heat pump for the worst-case heating load (your design temp). In hot climates, size for cooling. A Manual J load calculation is the gold standard, but for most homes the rule of thumb is 20-25 BTU per sq ft for cooling, plus an extra 10-30% for cold climates.

Step 4: Maximize tax credits and rebates

The federal 25C tax credit gives up to $2,000 back on heat pumps that meet or exceed CEE Tier requirements (typically SEER2 ≥ 16, HSPF2 ≥ 8.1 for split systems). Many states stack additional rebates — Massachusetts (Mass Save), New York (NYSERDA), Maine, Vermont, and the Pacific Northwest all offer $500-$8,000 in heat pump incentives. Save your invoice and AHRI certificate for tax filing.

Step 5: Plan for backup heat (cold climates only)

Even Hyper Heat units lose some capacity below -10°F. In Zone 5+ climates, plan for either a small electric resistance backup (built into many systems), an existing gas/oil furnace as a hybrid setup, or a wood stove for the few coldest days. Most days the heat pump handles 100% of the load efficiently.

Common questions

How does a heat pump work?+

A heat pump uses refrigerant and a compressor to move heat from one place to another. In summer it pulls heat out of your home and dumps it outside (cooling). In winter it does the reverse — pulls heat from outside air (yes, even cold air contains heat energy) and delivers it inside. Because it MOVES heat instead of generating it, a heat pump produces 2-4 units of heat for every unit of electricity it uses.

Do heat pumps work in cold climates?+

Yes — modern Hyper Heat (cold climate) heat pumps operate at 100% rated capacity down to 5°F and continue heating effectively to -22°F. Older heat pumps struggled below freezing, but variable-speed inverter technology and improved refrigerants (R-454B in MrCool 5th Gen) have largely solved the cold-climate problem.

Are heat pumps cheaper to run than gas?+

In most US climates, yes. The math depends on your local electricity and gas prices and your climate. As a rule of thumb: in any climate where electricity is under $0.20/kWh and natural gas is over $1.50/therm, a heat pump is cheaper. In all-electric homes (no gas line), a heat pump is dramatically cheaper than electric baseboards or resistance furnaces.

How much does a heat pump cost?+

Ductless heat pumps (mini splits) range from $700 for a small DIY unit to $4,000+ for whole-house multi-zone. Central ducted heat pumps are $2,500-$8,000 for the equipment, plus $2,000-$5,000 for installation. After the federal 25C tax credit ($2,000) and any state rebates, total cost can drop $2,500-$10,000 depending on your state.

What is the federal 25C heat pump tax credit?+

The 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (made permanent and expanded under the Inflation Reduction Act) gives a 30% tax credit on qualifying heat pumps and heat pump water heaters, capped at $2,000 per year. To qualify, the unit must meet CEE Tier minimum efficiency (typically SEER2 16+, HSPF2 8.1+ for split systems). Most MrCool systems we sell qualify. Save your AHRI certificate for tax filing.

How long do heat pumps last?+

A well-maintained heat pump lasts 12-20 years. The compressor (the most expensive component) typically goes 10-15 years; the indoor air handler longer. MrCool systems include a 7-year parts and compressor warranty when registered.
