Why the Industry Is Switching
In 2020, the U.S. Congress passed the AIM Act (American Innovation and Manufacturing Act), directing the EPA to phase down production of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) — the category of chemicals that includes R-410A.
R-410A has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 2,088. That means one pound of R-410A released into the atmosphere has the same warming effect as 2,088 pounds of CO2. The AIM Act mandates an 85% reduction in HFC production by 2036.
Starting January 1, 2025, all new residential HVAC equipment manufactured for the U.S. market must use refrigerants with a GWP of 700 or less. R-410A is no longer an option for new systems.
What Is R-454B?
R-454B (marketed by Honeywell as "Solstice N-41") is a blend of R-32 (68.9%) and R-1234yf (31.1%). Its key advantage:
- GWP of 466 — a 78% reduction from R-410A's 2,088
This makes R-454B compliant with current and foreseeable EPA regulations.

The performance difference is essentially negligible for homeowners. MrCool's 5th Gen systems achieve the same or better SEER2 ratings on R-454B as the 4th Gen did on R-410A. The DIY 12K 5th Gen hits up to 22 SEER2 — matching or exceeding its predecessor.
The lower operating pressure of R-454B actually means slightly less stress on compressor components, which could translate to longer equipment life.

The A2L Flammability Classification
The most discussed change is the flammability rating. R-410A is classified A1 (non-flammable). R-454B is classified A2L — "mildly flammable" or "lower flammability."
This sounds concerning until you understand what A2L actually means:
- Burning velocity under 10 cm/s (extremely slow — a candle is faster)
- Requires an ignition source of 10,000+ joules (a static spark is 0.001 joules)
- Will not sustain combustion without continuous external energy
- Dissipates rapidly in open or ventilated spaces
For practical comparison: R-454B is less flammable than hair spray, cooking spray, or the gas in a standard lighter. The A2L classification is a regulatory category, not a practical household hazard.
