Stop Guessing: Pick the Right MrCool Size

Buying the wrong size mini split is the most common mistake homeowners make. Too small and it runs constantly without reaching temperature. Too large and it short cycles, wasting energy and leaving you with poor humidity control.

Here's your definitive guide to matching MrCool DIY 5th Gen systems to every room size.

The Basic Formula

Start with 20 BTU per square foot for a standard room with 8-foot ceilings in a moderate climate. Then adjust based on factors we'll cover below.

Adjustment Factors That Move You Up or Down

Go UP a Size If:

High ceilings (9-12 ft): Add 10% BTU per extra foot of ceiling height. A 400 sq ft room with 10-foot ceilings needs the same capacity as a 480 sq ft room with 8-foot ceilings.

Direct sun exposure: South and west-facing rooms with large windows absorb significant solar heat. Add 10-15% for multiple large windows facing the afternoon sun.

Upper floor: Heat rises. Second and third floors are consistently 5-10°F warmer than ground level. Add 10%.

Poor insulation: Older homes (pre-1980), rooms above garages, bonus rooms over porches, and spaces with single-pane windows lose conditioned air fast. Add 15-20%.

Hot climate (AZ, TX, FL, NV): If outdoor temps regularly exceed 100°F, add 10-15%.

Kitchen or high-occupancy space: Cooking appliances, multiple computers, and lots of people generate heat. Add 10-20% for kitchens and media rooms.

Go DOWN a Size If:

Well-insulated new construction: Modern building codes require better insulation. Homes built after 2015 with proper insulation can often drop 10-15%.

Shaded rooms: North-facing rooms or spaces shaded by trees require less cooling. Subtract 10%.

Basement or below-grade: Naturally cooler spaces need less cooling capacity. Subtract 10-20%.

Mild climate: Pacific Northwest, Northern California, coastal areas where highs rarely exceed 90°F. Subtract 10%.

Standard Bedroom (120-200 sq ft)

Living Room (300-500 sq ft)

The 12K is the sweet spot for average living rooms. It provides enough airflow to circulate through connected dining areas and hallways without being oversized.

Open-Concept Living/Dining (500-800 sq ft)

Open floor plans need more capacity because conditioned air isn't contained by walls. The 18K on 230V provides the BTUs and airflow to handle these spaces. Position the air handler centrally for best distribution.

Great Room / Large Open Concept (800-1,100 sq ft)

Large great rooms, especially with cathedral ceilings and lots of glass, need serious capacity. The 24K delivers up to 24,000 BTU of cooling and 25,000 BTU of heating.

Whole Floor / Large Bonus Space (1,100-1,500 sq ft)

Sunroom / Enclosed Porch (150-300 sq ft)

Despite the small square footage, sunrooms have extreme solar gain. The 12K provides enough capacity to overcome afternoon sun through glass walls. The 9K may struggle on peak summer afternoons.

Multi-Zone vs Multiple Single-Zone Systems

If you need to condition multiple rooms, you have two options:

  1. Multiple single-zone systems: Each room gets its own DIY 5th Gen unit. Independent, simple, and each room has its own outdoor unit.

  2. Multi-zone system: One outdoor condenser powers 2-5 indoor air handlers. Saves outdoor space, potentially lower total cost, but if the condenser fails, all zones go down.

For 2-3 rooms, multiple single-zone units offer better redundancy and independent operation. For 4+ rooms, a multi-zone system makes more sense from a space and cost perspective.

When in Doubt, Size Up Slightly

Modern inverter mini splits like the MrCool 5th Gen handle mild oversizing much better than old fixed-speed systems. The inverter compressor ramps down to as low as 20% capacity, so a slightly oversized unit simply runs at a lower speed rather than short cycling.

That said, don't jump two sizes up. Going from 9K need to a 12K is fine. Going from 9K need to an 18K will cause problems.
