Is 5th Generation worth the price premium over 4th Gen?+
Usually yes — the R-454B refrigerant qualifies for stronger federal/state rebates, often offsetting the $200-$400 price difference. If your state has aggressive heat pump incentives (MA, NY, ME, VT, WA, OR), 5th Gen is the clear winner. If you're in a state with no heat pump rebates, 4th Gen still performs excellently.
Are 5th Generation systems backward-compatible with 4th Gen?+
No. 5th Generation uses R-454B refrigerant; 4th Gen uses R-410A. The refrigerants are NOT compatible. You can't mix a 5th Gen condenser with a 4th Gen indoor unit, or vice versa. When upgrading, replace both indoor and outdoor as a matched set.
